The Kiawah Conservancy's Habitat Improvement Initiative
The assessment form focuses on the importance of layering, structure and extent of vegetation, especially in the understory and edges, in your landscape.  The components of the assessment form stress the importance of maintaining good cover for wildlife species through landscaping techniques that enhance the habitat value of the main yard area and property buffers.  Good habitat has natural "soft" edges that exhibit a gradual transition in species composition (and often vertical structure) that provide cover all the way down to ground level.  "Soft" edges maintain a higher degree of species diversity than "hard" edges (buffers that display an abrupt change in habitat with no transition).
